The Dark Knight

No I have not seen the movie (and yes I am very excited to be in the theater tomorrow to watch it). But I am talking about the Magic's very own superhero.

And it is not Dwight "Superman" Howard.

A lot of Orlando Magic fans I have found are forgetting about their "Batman." No joke(r).

Tony Battie is ready to don his cape and save the day for Orlando. OK maybe he is not that good and cannot do that much. But believe that he is a band-aid for Orlando's center problem.

Battie missed the last season because of a torn rotator cuff. His presence was much missed in the postseason when Detroit's bigger lineup bullied Howard and Orlando.

How would his presence have helped?

Battie is just a solid performer. He is not spectacular in any way, but he is solid. Stan Van Gundy knows exactly what he will get from Tony Battie -- about eight points and five rebounds.

But those meager stats are enough. As long as he is healthy, he will help give Howard a lot of space and a lot of help.

Battie is the only center on the roster who can hit a jump shot. He has range beyond the post area, but he can also go into the post and make some plays.

Battie's range is something defenders have to respect. This will free up a lot of space for Howard to operate in the low post. This spacing is much different than Rashard Lewis at the four. Hanging around the three point line gives defenders more time to close out shooters. It also allows an easier shift from perimeter defenders.

The strategy worked in the regular season. But the Pistons solved it pretty easily.

That second post player means the second big man cannot leave Battie because of his ability to score around the basket. Previously guys like Rasheed Wallace and Jason Maxiell could pretty much play a zone with Howard and just swarm him because they could simply overpower Lewis at the rim.

A lot of people have been complaining about Orlando's lack of depth in the front court as their free agent search seems to be ending.

But they are getting back a big part of their team next year. Battie will be a big help for Orlando...

that is IF he can stay healthy.
