Jason Taylor to the Redskins, no longer terrorizes the AFC East

Although the Dolphins weren’t exactly a “contender” last season, Jason Taylor still lived in Tom Brady’s nightmares. Over the course of his career, the All-World DE has been one of the best players in the NFL, especially in terms of his getting-to-Brady skills (along with Buffalo DE Aaron Schobel). However, Brady can sleep easy now, and not because he’s sharing his bed with Gisele. The Dolphins have announced a trade which will send Taylor to the Washington Redskins for a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-rounder in 2010.

The Parcells-run Dolphins had been actively looking for an opportunity to move Taylor, who asked to be traded to a playoff contender (and away from Parcells) at the beginning of the offseason. Before the draft, the Dolphins were asking for a first-round draft choice. After news that Redskins DE Phillip Daniels may miss the entire season, the Redskins were quick to meet the Dolphins’ reduced asking price of a 2nd round pick for Taylor. Although originally stating he will play for one more season, Taylor now claims to be willing to play out the final two years of his contract.

What’s peculiar is that while the Redskins can definitely fight for a playoff spot, they have a few too many questions to justifiably claim they're a lock for the post-season. Add in a brand new coaching staff and the playoffs are far from guaranteed for Washington. Will Taylor demand another trade if the ‘Skins miss the playoffs this year? A 2nd round pick may have been a bit too steep a price if Taylor only lasts one season. However, his skills on the defensive line are unparalleled, and he will undoubtedly continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

Last year, Taylor was picked as the NFL Man of the Year and was the only Pro Bowl player for his 1-15 Dolphins team. He also danced with the stars.
