The night of nights

Well the night of nights came and went - and what a night it was.

Some “Legends of Cammeray” hit the scene including:

Our two stalwarts - Neil Smith and David “Dicko” Dickinson tops my list of “Legends of Cammeray” and it was great to see them once again attend the night. How many presso’s has it been in a row guys?

Ian “Smokey” Dawson who gave up his pre-golf game ritual of a couple of laps around the local park and an early night to attend. At stakes for Smokey was ending a life long winning streak of beating his old mate at golf. He’s apparently never lost against him and was concerned that alcohol and a late night combined with an early morning tee-off might just lose it for him. Hope you won Smokey - good to hear the old “Winner’s P*ss” call on the night.

Peter Wall and Phil Fox - members of the ‘95 winning C Grade premiership attended the night. Both these gentlemen had not played for several years - but quickly re-established old friendships with those that were still around.

Former Club President, Phil Petersen also attended and looked as fighting fit as ever - must do the same workout as our ever-green George Marcinkiewic. Former A grade bowling spearhead Simon Mitchell was also in attendance as was former NSCA president and former Cammeray player Craig Hambleton.

As occurs on these nights - talks of ex-players and where are they now happens - and a couple I managed to hear was that Michael Vos is still in Switzerland (I think) and Michael Low is still in the US, doing well in IT and get this doing pretty well at Table-Tennis. Also understand these two regularly check out the happenings at cammeraycricket.com - so hi guys from steve si.

I may have missed out on a couple of others there - and if so sorry, nothing personal - I’m trying to recall something I should have written down on the night.

What else happened? Hmmm, let’s cover the award winners first:

A Grade - Peter Eirth took out both Batting awards, Kane Stavens both bowling awards and Wade Ridley both fielding (Catches and Fielding) awards. Kane also picked up the Best and Fairest and also a Career First 10 wickets in a match trophy.

A Reserves - Michael Glenton took out both Batting awards, Club President Loch van den Burg the Bowling aggregate and Benn Glazier the Bowling Average. Benn and Michael shared the Catching award and Shaun Rutherford took out the Fielding award. B&F deservedly went to Michael Glenton.

B Grade - Rob King took both Batting Awards, Micheal Tate the Bowling awards, Catches went to Junior and Kingy also picked up the Fielding award for his wicket-keeping. Best and Fairest went to Phil Szabo who collected the most amount of 3-2-1 votes throughout the season.

B2 - Tim took the Batting Aggregate, Jason Lieboff the Batting Average, David Camacho won the Bowling Aggregate and Paul “Bunt” McGrath the Bowling Average. Dave Knife took the Catches award and Guy Abelsohn won the fielding award. Jason took out the Best and Fairest for B2.

Vaugh Patterson joined the 100 wickets / 1000 runs club.

Andy Bull clocked 250 games, Phil “Filthy” Murphy finally played 100 games - Mick Glenton reached the 2000 runs milestone and Brad Cambridge hit the 4 figure mark with 1000 runs.

Other awards went to Adrian Eizenberg for his Injury of the Year. Tim Wall took out the David Dickinson Most Improved Award - good going for a guy who’s 41 to still keep improving. The Clubman award has fittingly been named the “Phil Bowen Clubman of the Year” award and new-comer Paul McGrath won this one with his work on the yearbook, selling about 11 raffle tickets, selling about 250 boxes of chocolates, and a great social co-ordinator.

The culmination of the award night came with the awarding of the “John Bowtell” award going to probably our youngest ever receipent David Lieboff - with a proud Mum and Dad accepting the award on his behalf. David apparently also captured a “5 for” playing in England that week. Fittingly in this our 75th year, we handed out Life Membership to Ben Scarf - well done mate.

So after much drinking, listening to an entertaining talk from Gavin Robertson, kicking on to the Oaks and then Minsky, another Presso is behind us and thought turn to early September where we’ll start Pre-season training in preparation for another Summer of Cricket.
